会 vs 能 vs 可以

Similar and easily confused words, and how they differ.

• 能 néng can; to be able to

  会 = a learned skill (我会游泳 'I can swim') or a prediction (他会来 'he will come'). 能 = physical ability or circumstances permitting.

• 可以 kě yǐ may; to be allowed to

  可以 grants permission — 你可以走了 'you may go'. 会 never expresses permission.
