田字格 or 米字格: which grid?

田字格 (tiánzìgé, field grid) divides the square into four quadrants with one horizontal and one vertical dashed line. It is the standard grid in Chinese primary schools and enough for most practice.

米字格 (mǐzìgé, rice grid) adds the two diagonals, so the square is divided like the character 米. The extra guides make it easier to place slanting strokes like 丿 and ㇏ and to see a character's balance. Beginners and calligraphy practice usually start here.

Practice modes

Trace prints a light gray character in every cell: write directly over it. Fade gives two ghost copies then empty cells, so you shift from tracing to recalling. Stroke by stroke builds each character one stroke at a time, in the correct order, with the newest stroke slightly darker. Blank leaves the practice cells empty, and with an empty text field produces pure grid paper.
