去 vs 到 vs 来 vs 走

Similar and easily confused words, and how they differ.

• 到 dào to arrive; until

  去 = heading somewhere; 到 = having arrived. 我去北京 'I go to Beijing'; 我到了 'I've arrived'.

• 来 lái to come

  Direction pair: 去 moves away from the speaker, 来 moves toward — 回去 'go back' vs 回来 'come back'.

• 走 zǒu to walk; to leave

  走 is 'walk' or 'depart' — 我走了 'I'm leaving'. 去 takes a destination — 我去北京.
