月 vs 月亮 vs 月份

Similar and easily confused words, and how they differ.

• 月亮 yuè liang the moon

  Same character: 月 = 'month' or the bound 'moon'; 月亮 is the spoken word for the moon itself.

• 月份 yuè fèn month (of the year)

  The named month — 一月份 'January'. 月 is also the counter — 两个月 'two months' (never *两个月份).
