做 vs 作 vs 干

作 zuò to do (bound/formal)
Same pinyin: 作 mostly lives inside fixed words — 作业 'homework', 工作 'work'. 做 is the standalone everyday 'do/make' — 做饭 'cook'.

干 gàn to do; to work
Casual 'do' — 你在干什么 'what are you doing?'. Very colloquial and crude in some phrases; 做 is the safe default.
