• 好 hǎo good

  最 'most' + 好 = the superlative 'best'. 好 alone is plain 'good'.

• 更好 gèng hǎo better

  The comparative — 更 'even more' + 好. Note 最好 also means 'had better': 你最好小心 'you'd better be careful'.
