包 vs 袋子 vs 包子

Similar and easily confused words, and how they differ.

• 袋子 dài zi bag; sack

  Generic 'bag/sack' — shopping bags and sacks. 包 covers purses, backpacks and packets — 书包 'schoolbag'.

• 包子 bāo zi bao; steamed bun

  Same first character — 包 also means 'to wrap', so a 包子 is a 'wrapped' bun. Don't order a bag for breakfast.
